Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
