Vonn's Winter Games Comeback Picks Up Speed with Top-Three Finish in France

The expectations surrounding the legendary skier's comeback trail have changed so profoundly that even a podium finish now is accompanied by a sense of disappointment.

The four-time Olympian clinched the bronze position in Saturday's women's World Cup downhill, continuing a sensational start to the season that has so far seen a win and a second place in the last week and a half. However, a minor error on the bottom stretch of the demanding track cost her valuable time, leaving Vonn certain a victory had escaped her.

Dominant Display Takes the Win for Huetter

The Austrian contender delivered a flawless performance to take the top spot on the podium this season, recording a time of 1:41.54. Second-place finisher Weidle-Winkelmann finished second, trailing by over a quarter-second, while Vonn ended her run in third, 0.35 off the pace.

“A year ago, if you'd questioned me, my answer would have been ecstatic just to be on the podium,” the skier remarked. “But now I know I’m fast. Minor slip-ups are the difference victory from defeat.”

Remarkable Return to Form

This performance signifies Vonn's third podium in her four starts this season and the 141st of her legendary career. This is an incredible statistic for an athlete who returned last season after nearly six years of retirement. One year ago, she did not finish in the top three in her comeback tour; today, she heads the downhill World Cup standings with 240 points.

A New Contender Rises

Last season's title holder, was faster throughout than Vonn after the opening split and hit a top speed of 126kph (78mph). The 33-year-old Austrian now owns five World Cup downhill wins and is establishing herself as a leading contender for the Olympic crown on 8 February.

Italy’s Sofia Goggia, considered by many Huetter's biggest threat, suffered a significant setback. Leading at the mid-point, the reigning Olympic title holder was compelled to stand up while regaining her composure negotiating a bend and lost traction, finishing eighth, 0.62 seconds off the lead.

Upward Trend Towards Cortina

For Vonn, the overall narrative remains overwhelmingly positive. Since receiving a medical intervention in her injured joint, she has regained her form and confidence, culminating in her maiden victory since her comeback last weekend. With fewer than seven weeks until the Winter Games begin, she is confident her path is on course.

“I’m looking forward to recharging a bit,” Vonn said. “I am confident I will be prepared.”
