UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
