The White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative $34 Million Agreement.
In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.
Financial Terms and Incentives
The contract features a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250K for ranking fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The contract includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever player from Japan to suit up for the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, enters a young lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
