NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away following his triumph in November.

"My choice rested on the security of my family and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his humble Astoria home.

With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
