The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
