The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
