The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
