In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola in a state of despair and gifted the temporary Chelsea manager a unforgettable moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch, making the recollection of Fernández's crucial intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old throughout his career.

A Glaring Contrast in Pedigree

On the home bench was the era's defining coach, a man with four decades of silverware for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and arrived to make his senior managerial bow after being temporarily promoted from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a slew of absences, most notably Chelsea's key midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed nearly insurmountable.

Another key part of his blueprint was to maximise disruption. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea delayed at a dead ball, a sure sign the City's tempo was being broken up and the Guardiola blueprint was being frustrated.
