The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why not reference the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
