Sheffield Wednesday Receive 12-Point Deduction Following Entering Administration

Sheffield Wednesday supporters described the day as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the team was placed into administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.

Club Crisis Leads to Points Penalty

The Owls now face almost certain relegation following the EFL’s penalty left them on -6 points, 15 adrift of safety. Players and staff experienced delayed wages over recent months, compounding the period of turbulence.

The appointed administrators are now in charge of the process aiming to sell club assets, along with Hillsborough stadium, to settle outstanding debts including tax liabilities. Soon after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed from the North Stand.

“Entering administration was the inevitable outcome of years of financial mismanagement, poor oversight, and repeated failures to engage credible buyers stated the supporters' trust. “Administration is not something to be celebrated. It could have been avoided. But we are overjoyed to have Dejphon Chansiri out of our club for good

Manager’s Perspective on Fresh Start

Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff early Friday. Pedersen stated administration was required for a fresh start.

The manager emphasized “while difficult, this marks a positive turning point”, adding: “We knew from the last five, six, seven, eight months it cannot continue. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. When I close my eyes, I can see a bright future for Sheffield Wednesday

Employee Concerns

Club staff were emotional upon hearing the update, as the manager explained: “Uncertainty exists. Do we get our salary now? What comes next? Will things improve? Or won't they? The general feeling was that they are all looking forward to the future together with Sheffield Wednesday

Continuing Money Problems

The club's condition worsened significantly since the summer when the manager Danny Röhl and several key players departed due to salary delays. The EFL expressed concern about the club’s finances earlier this season.

Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, using any income including league payments to address liabilities. With reports of an imminent winding-up order by tax authorities, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.

Administrator’s Statement

A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield appointed by Begbies Traynor said: “Like many football clubs, [Wednesday] has been trading at a significant loss over multiple seasons, previously covered by the owner. Due to increased financial pressure, the owner opted for administration allowing us to sell the club and ground as a whole, a positive development for fans.”

Government Reaction

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight served as another reminder the importance of a football regulator, recently legislated. It should be active by the 2027-28 campaign.

“My club Wigan faced similar issues, so I understand fans want a quick solution,” she added.

Fan Response

Wednesday fans have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season and thousands stayed away during the Middlesbrough match as part of ongoing protests. Ahead of the Oxford game, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Each purchase and visit supports recovery. Real change is within our grasp – but only if we are prepared to seize it. Now is the time to be Wednesday

Future Prospects

The trust anticipates buyer interest while developing a “fan-led takeover proposal” guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.

The manager, once an assistant, hasn't accepted demotion despite the severity of the challenge. “We must modernize while honoring tradition, he stated. The club has great potential. I'm confident we can stay up. We will keep fighting
