Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
