New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was āupbeatā during their latest talk.
āThatās what eases my mind, is that heās in good spirits,ā Glenn stated on Wednesday. āHis family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.ā
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
āDonāt know just yet,ā Glenn remarked. āHowever, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.ā
New York police shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking āconstantlyā since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
āThe first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,ā Glenn remarked. āAnd Iām thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that heās OK. And thatās the only thing that really went through my mind.
āThereās a process to this, which I wonāt get into, but Iām happy at the fact that heās going to come out of this thing really, really well.ā
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
āHe remains involved with our activities,ā Glenn commented. āI mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.ā
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houstonās squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
