Weather experts are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, making warm wraps vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Readings Set to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this meant the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, dressing for the cold is utterly paramount.
