Netherlands Moderate Rob Jetten Wins Tightly Contested Election Race, Ballot Count Says

Rob Jetten
The Political Figure, Thirty-Eight, is now tipped to assume the role of the most youthful prime minister in modern Dutch history.

The moderate political faction under the leadership of Rob Jetten has emerged victorious in the midweek neck-and-neck election race, according to ballot assessments indicating it cannot be overtaken by anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders.

His political group presently holds a slight advantage of fifteen thousand ballots over Wilders' Freedom Party, and local media sources report that despite the fact the ballot tally is not complete, Wilders can no longer win.

Projections from nearly all of the vote put both parties on 26 seats in the 150-seat parliament - but ANP indicates the moderate faction could win a 27th seat.

Victory will signify the winning candidate will be able to start work on forming a coalition.

Electoral Approach and City Victories

The populist candidate had topped surveys ahead of the pivotal vote, but the centrist leader, in his late thirties, managed to secure victories in some of the main urban centers such as the port city, The Hague and the central hub with a positive campaign employing a slogan of "We are capable"

The candidate has been careful to avoid premature celebration until all votes are in, but election authorities stated according to figures from overseas ballots he may now be confirmed as the winner.

An estimated 90,000 overseas ballots are still being counted.

Coalition Challenges

Although his path to forming a coalition is complex, he is projected to assume office as the most youthful prime minister in recent Netherlands political annals.

The election frontrunner said after the vote that historically had a political group secured victory in a Dutch election with fewer than 30 seats.

He will require the backing of at least three additional political factions to accumulate the seventy-six positions required to establish a governing majority. The most obvious candidates would be the conservative-liberal VVD, the left-wing Labour (PvdA)-GreenLeft alliance and the center-right Christian party, but it might require extensive negotiations if such an arrangement is to materialize.

The current head of government Dick Schoof predicted on Friday that the formation process would be challenging. "I reckon I'll still be prime minister at Christmas - I'd be surprised if it happened [by then]".
