Michael Jordan Testifies He ‘Wasn’t Afraid’ of the Racing Body in Antitrust Trial
Michael Jeffrey Jordan, as he cordially introduced himself in a federal courtroom on Friday, admitted that his competitive side and status as a newcomer motivated his push for 23XI Racing to “challenge” Nascar over perceived violations of antitrust rules.

“Someone had to step forward,” Jordan stated in the Charlotte courtroom. “I was a new person, I wasn’t afraid. I felt I could challenge Nascar as a whole. I felt as far as the sport it needed to be looked at from a different view.”
Central Issue: Franchise System and Renewal Demands
The heart of the case involves the expiration of a 2016 agreement where Nascar granted each team a “charter”. The concept is similar to other professional sports with separately owned franchises, such as the NBA’s Hornets or the NFL’s Panthers. The agreement was set to expire in 2024 when Nascar demanded teams renew their charters.

Heather Gibbs’ Testimony
Heather Gibbs detailed her push for indefinite franchises, submitted in a written letter to Nascar. She said the timing of the signature deadline didn’t sit well.
According to her, Joe Gibbs first tried to call and talk Nascar out of forcing signatures, but CEO Jim France refused the appeal.
“Please don’t force this on us,” Heather Gibbs said Joe Gibbs told Nascar’s leadership. The response was, “If I wake up and I have 20 charters, that’s what I have. If I have 30, I have 30.”
