The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
