Wythenshawe Veterans Over-35s are situated in south the city and play in the Cheshire Veterans League Premier Tier.

The squad list this season includes nine former Premier League players, with a total 1,801 Premier League matches.

The star-studded roster also contains 222 Premier League scores and over 320 international appearances.

They feature Papiss Cisse, who notched 37 goals in 117 appearances for Newcastle United after moving to them for £9m from German league club SC Freiburg in January 2012.

He had his first appearance for Wythenshawe in their last home game against defending champions Collegiate Old Boys and scored every one of the six scores in a 6-2 win - featuring a half-hour opening period hat-trick.

The roster for this season also includes former pros such as England and Anfield striker Emile Heskey, Hull City and Burnley FC winger George Boyd, Toffees striker Oumar Niasse, Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa, City duo Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha and Premier League title winners Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater.

Collectively, the former Premier League players have secured fifteen big honors and moved for total transfer fees of approximately £123m.

Well-Known Figures and International Stars

Ireland started playing for the team in pre-season this summer through close mate and current Wythenshawe player Blake Norton, and the ex- Irish player then asked other former professionals, who all compete in a weekly small-sided game, to join in.

Ex- Senegal forward Oumar Niasse, who scored 12 goals in 65 Premier League matches for the Toffees and even now goes to their matches at Goodison Park, also made his first appearance versus the opposition - who are based in the city and use an Everton training kit as their strip.

"A friend Stephen Ireland told me 'come and have a game, it's good fun'," commented Niasse.

"Then he informed me we were playing a side from the city and the surprise I had when I noticed them sporting Blue shirts - I say this is strange for me!

"If you still love the game and you feel you can still do it, anywhere you can play, what are you going to do?

"Those people who come and watch are happy and to give someone's moment if they watch us competing there and to ask us questions - it's really about the pleasure of us getting a place we can enjoy football, with structure of course."

So great is the bench strength at Wythenshawe, he had his debut at defender.

"It's a little unusual but then, I enjoy sprinting and just go inside - I'm not defending that much," he said.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to continue attacking.

"That running is what I'm seeking. It's enjoyable."

'Surreal Scenario

Along with Cisse's six goals on his first game, Stephen Ireland has netted 8 in three appearances for Wythenshawe, while Boyd scored five on his first appearance and Joleon Lescott, a defender by position, notched a hat-trick in one match up front.

Wythenshawe are top of the Top Tier with three wins from 3 and a goal difference of +19.

One opponent, thirty-eight, who plays on the wing for the opposition, faced ex- Wigan defender Figueroa on the weekend - and had to explain his young son who Heskey was.

He has played at 2 global tournaments for his country, in addition to playing in more than two hundred top-flight matches.

"The news was spreading like a rumor they had all these former top-flight players," remarked the player.

"I think I was a bit starstruck playing against him to be honest.

"Also Emile [Heskey] got on and he's got over 60 England appearances.

"We competed well for a good 20 minutes but then we had a player dismissed and it was hard.

"We literally haven't ceased chatting about it - I was phoning my mother and sibling on the journey home.

"The opponents were all dead sound, shaking our hands after the game - it was like playing a bunch of normal fellas.

"Now we are eager for the return fixture."
