Hardline Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's New President.

Following a conclusive second-round vote, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Campaign Centered On Security and Immigration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely built on promises to combat rising crime and drastically restrict immigration.

He repeatedly blamed immigrants, notably the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face deportation.

His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.

Amid a Regional Trend

Several analysts see Kast's success as fitting into a wider rightward trend in Latin America, following recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts also view it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Solid Majority

In spite of his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in parliament, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This legislative reality might challenge his plans, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to offered specifics.

"We have numerous questions about how a Kast administration will be that remain unclear because he has not said how he will implement them," noted a political science expert.

The professor stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts associated with the right. However where there is much less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
