Gamers Are Receiving a New Game in the Greatest Star Wars Series of All Time, Directed by a Mass Effect Dev.

The galaxy far, far away enthusiasts have no shortage of titles when it comes to great video games featuring lightsabers, but the galaxy created by George Lucas is far beyond a playground for combat. Not many franchises have grasped this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the classic computer role-playing game style that made developers like Obsidian and BioWare renowned. Now, after several delays and setbacks, a major gaming showcase has announced that fans will soon be able to experience a spiritual follow-up to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Big Reveal

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and successor in spirit to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is leading it at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we created the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a quintessential Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that was made of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our goals are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an opportunity to delve into a modern vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an all-new story written specifically to deliver on the fusion of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the center of KOTOR.”

An Unexpected Turn

The reveal is something of a shock, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get pushed back with no date. However, reports had suggested that a reimagining of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been under development through March 2025.

Here is the synopsis for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

Why KOTOR Matters

The iconic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their narrative-focused, decision-based, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they unintentionally established how people imagine the Old Republic era as a whole, still today. The games ventured to question many aspects of Jedi lore that are often considered absolute, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a considerably bleaker direction by asking if the world might not be improved without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans long after their release, but the second installment in particular is viewed by many as one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media ever made.

The Future is Bright

And now, four years after receiving a vibe-heavy trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, fans are finally receiving another game in the comparable style. Given the demand for deep games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the possibility to be wildly successful.
