Fury Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Criticism
Personalities from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
