Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined term surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a minor who has lost their whole family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce
Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are continuing. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A competition that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
