Cameroon Opposition Figure Faces Legal Action Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Authorities Declares

Election Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has won an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

At least four protesters have been killed during clashes between security forces and opposition supporters since the electoral process on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya obtaining an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma maintains that he emerged victorious, a assertion dismissed by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on protesters have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, AU and European Union urging restraint.

Minister's Claims

On Tuesday, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he described as "unlawful" rallies causing the fatalities, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices behind an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

Cameroon's leader, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, obtained the 12 October vote with a majority of the ballots, compared to just over a third for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the government's decision to bring him to court, but he had previously announced that he rejected a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being detained.

Following the vote count, he reported that armed men used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 individuals.

Inquiry Launched

Earlier this week, the interior minister disclosed that an investigation would be started into unrest surrounding the publication of the election results.

"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved died," he stated, without providing a precise figure of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

The minister noted that several personnel of the security forces also received significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

While Nji insisted the situation throughout Cameroon was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in some parts of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators established barricades on that day, and ignited tires on the streets.

Observers caution that the election-related unrest could push the country into a governmental instability.
