A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
