An Tale of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book accommodation when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, I considered the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering in the direction of the casino, reasoning I could pass the evening somewhere operating all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
I must have looked confused because a young woman noticed me wandering around the city center and asked if I was OK. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she said I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She even offered some food: a leftover stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot to rest for the evening.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has repaid her good deed abundantly. The world needs more folks like that woman.
